Stanley Baiman, Ph.D., Receives Lifetime Contribution Award from AAA
The American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) and the Management Accounting Section of the American Accounting Association (AAA) have announced that Stanley Baiman, Ph.D., has been awarded the 2014 Lifetime Contribution Award. Professor Baiman was honored for his 30 plus years of research and teaching of key management accounting issues, including those relevant in inter-firm contracting problems.

The American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) and the Management Accounting Section of the American Accounting Association (AAA) have announced that Stanley Baiman, Ph.D., has been awarded the 2014 Lifetime Contribution Award. Professor Baiman was honored for his 30 plus years of research and teaching of key management accounting issues, including those relevant in inter-firm contracting problems.
Wim A Van der Stede, CIMA Professor of Accounting and Financial Management Head of Department of Accounting presented the award at the 2014 AAA Management Accounting Section’s mid-year meeting. Sponsored by the AICPA, the Lifetime Contribution Award recognizes individuals who have made an important mark on management accounting education, research and practice.
“The AICPA is very pleased to recognize Professor Baiman’s significant contributions to management accounting,” said Jim Morrison, CPA, CGMA, chief financial officer of Teknor Apex Co. and chair of the AICPA’s Business & Industry Executive Committee. “Baiman’s dedication to his research and students has helped shape the field of management accounting. His efforts enable CPAs working in business and industry, many of whom are CEOs and CFOs, to make better financial decisions.”
Baiman is the William H. Lawrence Emeritus Professor at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and Adjunct Professor at Bocconi University in Milan, Italy. He is an expert in management accounting. His key areas of research and teaching include incentive mechanisms within firms and within supply chains.
Among the topics that he has studied are the design of: multi-stage capital budgeting systems, internal transfer pricing systems, supply chain monitoring and contracting, and inventory buffers.
He has published in: Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Accounting and Economics, The Accounting Review, The Review of Accounting Studies, Accounting Organizations and Society, and Management Science. Currently he is an editor of The Review of Accounting Studies.
Baiman has written a number of influential surveys, which have become essential reading for Ph.D. students and researchers throughout the world in accounting as well as adjacent fields. His survey articles include “Agency Research in Managerial Accounting” (Journal of Accounting Literature 1982) and “Agency Research in Managerial Accounting: A Second Look”.
Baiman has been on the faculty of Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh and he was a visiting faculty member at Stanford University and the London School of Economics. He received his Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University.
